Day 2: encounter the mountain gorilla in Parc Nationale des Volcans

A Silver back weighs 3times as much as an average man thus is enormous. Nevertheless despite being enormous; the mountain gorilla is undoubtedly very peaceful in comparison to other primates. This makes tracking the mountain gorilla reasonably safe. Several families have been fully habituated and are accessible to visitors. Getting to the point where you will view the mountain gorilla is normally hard work since it will require you to be reasonably fit. Nevertheless despite the steep slopes, dense vegetation and slippery passages in case of rain, gorilla tracking can be attempted by adults of any age successfully without any regrets.  After the whole experience both the financial and physical expense are worthwhile.

Visitors however have the opportunities to view a habituated group of these IUCN listed endangered species.

The hike to Dian Fossey’s tomb involves visit Fossey’s old living quarters nicknamed ‘the mausoleum’ and a visit to the adjacent gorilla cemetery or the former Karisoke research centre.

You can also optionally track a different gorilla group at will with the purchase of a second gorilla permit.

An onsite guide will take you around the memorial telling stories of the victims. You will view the children’s memorial, a wall of names with a list of thousands of children that lost their lives in the 1994 genocide. All the 14 windows of the genocide tell a personal story of an individual child that was massacred during the genocide. You will also view displays and skulls of adult victims as clear evidence of the actual killings. After the memorial tour you can then transfer to Kigali international airport to meet your home flight.
